Original article: Pekín contra la política de asfixia de Trump hacia Cuba: exige “cesar de inmediato el bloqueo, la coerción y las presiones”
China has raised its voice demanding that the United States (US) immediately lift its economic blockade and pressure on Cuba, in a statement reflecting the growing international discontent over the intensifying suffocating policy imposed by the Trump administration against the Caribbean island.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian was emphatic during a press conference, asserting that Beijing urges Washington to «immediately cease the blockade, coercion, and pressures against Cuba» and to end what he described as a systematic violation of the rights to life and development of the Cuban people.
The Chinese official recalled that his country has expressed this stance multiple times, emphasizing that the unilateral sanctions imposed by the United States have persisted for over six decades.
The diplomat criticized the economic blockade for causing «deep suffering to the Cuban people,» severely affecting their basic needs and raising growing concern in the international community.
«The United States has recently intensified its blockade and sanctions, severely impacting the basic needs of the Cuban people and generating significant concern globally,» he stated, as noted by RT.
Lin Jian highlighted that these measures have intensified under Trump’s second term, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis on the island.
China expressed its «strong support for Cuba in defending its national sovereignty and rejecting foreign interference,» and declared its readiness to collaborate with the international community to uphold fairness and justice globally. This statement comes amid heightened tensions, as the US administration has hardened its total suffocation policy towards Havana.
Trump’s Suffocation of Cuba
The economic and commercial blockade imposed by Washington has been in effect for over 60 years, but with Trump’s return to the White House in January 2025, coercive measures have multiplied. The US President himself has threatened military action to overthrow the Cuban government, a stance that the island has termed «genocide.»
The Trump administration maintains an active military presence in the Caribbean through Southern Command, and has openly admitted that its objective is to prevent Cuba from generating any economic revenue. Measures include blocking oil supply, a vital resource for the island’s energy needs, as well as restrictions in key sectors such as health, education, and transportation.
The multidimensional impact of the blockade has jeopardized essential services for the Cuban population, including fuel supply, healthcare, education programs, food distribution, and the tourism industry. Consequently, the island’s economy is under unprecedented pressure, directly affecting the daily lives of millions.
Washington’s oil blockade has intensified the energy crisis in Cuba with power outages exceeding 20 hours in Havana and a daily deficit approaching 2,000 megawatts. So far in 2026, the island has received only one fuel ship: the Russian tanker Anatoly Kolodkin, which brought 100,000 tons of crude oil.
The oil blockade also prevents over 100,000 children from receiving state-subsidized milk, which struggles to be transported from production centers to cities.
In terms of health, the US blockade against Cuba hinders access to raw materials, equipment, and financial resources needed to sustain the domestic production of vaccines, essential medications, and diagnoses for diseases like cancer.
Aligning with the demands of the international community, Beijing urges the United States to heed calls for justice and end a policy it considers contrary to international law and the principles of peaceful coexistence among nations. China’s stance reinforces the growing global consensus condemning unilateral sanctions as political coercion tools that wreak havoc on the island’s population.
