A total of 646 new medical science professionals graduated this week in the province, a figure that will reinforce the coverage of the territory’s health system.
The central ceremony of the 49th graduating class of the University of Medical Sciences of Holguín (UCMHo), dedicated to the centenary of Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz and the 50th anniversary of the Mariana Grajales Cuello Faculty of Medical Sciences, took place at the Bariay Club with the presence of the main political and governmental authorities of the province.
In general, 88 graduates received the distinction of Mario Muñoz Monroy Vanguard, 35 the Scientific Merit Award, 218 the Gold Title, and 24 were recognized as Comprehensive Vanguards—honors that attest to the excellence of higher education in the eastern province.
Dr. C. George Augusto Velázquez Zúñiga, rector of UCMHo, in his central remarks, recalled the years of effort and sacrifice by the young graduates, especially during the COVID‑19 pandemic, and quoted Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz, affirming that the mission of these graduates will be to save lives and preserve health as the noblest of professions.
The new doctors, dentists, nurses, and health technologists will join the territory’s health system to continue raising health indicators and respond to the population’s needs, in a context marked by the U.S. economic blockade and the Cuban people’s will to resist.
The graduation ceremony, accompanied emotionally by family and friends, was a recognition of the collective effort of students, professors, and health sector workers who daily write the history of Cuban medicine.
